West Louisville History and Photos part1

I think this is where the soul of the city resides. No matter how bad people may think it is, this is where the heart of the city was began IMO. Some people like the quite parts of the city, but i like the bustle and hustle of the west end, it's where i was raised and i've just gotten so used to it.

Intresting facts about the West End:

*Birth Place of Muhammad Ali: muhammad Ali was born and raised in the west end, he actually attended Central High School with my mother in the west end. His Boyhood home still stands on 3302 Grand ave.

* Other famous folks from West Lousville: Derrek Anderson Allen Houston Wes Unseld Greg Page Rashad Holeman Chris Dishman

*Shawnee Park was designed by the Olmstead Brothers

* The section along 28th Street in the vicinity of Dumesnil St. and Greenwood was a thriving commercial center until May, 1968 when a full-fledged riot broke out in the west end's Parkland neighborhood after the MLK assasination. The unrest broke out at 28th and Greenwood. Before it was over two teenagers had been killed - one by police and another by a liquor store owner.

*The West End was home to Fontaine Ferry Amusement Park (closed in 1969)

*Home to hidden treasure and often over-looked Shawnee Golf Course.

*Chickasaw Park was the only city park black people could use until Mayor Andrew Broadus ordered all parks, swimming pools and amphitheaters to admit all races in 1955.

*Plato Terrace on Sunset Avenue is named for Samuel Plato, a black architect who Louisville historian Walter Hutchins says designed and built many of the houses in the west end. Some of his work includes Broadway Temple A.M.E. Church at 15th and Broadway, among other buildings in the West End.

*If you Stay on Greenwood to 23rd Street, then turn right opposite Victory Park, and head down to Hill Street. The area along Hill Street between 14th and 7th streets is mostly industrial now, but it once was a sort of ramshackle neighborhood along the railroad tracks, made famous by Alice Hegan Rice's 1901 novel, Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch.

This is the Shawnee Neighborhood, a few of these photos i took from Shawnee Park.

This first photo is the begining of Broadway, or it can also be called the end of broadway

now you're are looking at Broadway&Southwester Parkway, sadly a 19 year old kid was killed on this corner a few weeks back. I catch the bus at that yellow stop almost everyday
